Col. Thomas Waters & Thomas W. Waters
Waters & Kindred Families, 1902 named Thomas Willoughby Waters as the brother of Col. Philemon Waters. This is incorrect. I have just written about Thomas Waters, brother of Col. Philemon Waters. He was born in 1738 and died after 1810. Thomas Willoughby Waters was a younger man. I found the descendants of Thomas W. Waters in Maldin, Missouri. They have a family bible that belonged to Fannie Waters Ellis, the daughter of Thomas Willoughby Waters. The publishing date is 1831 . The family would not put it on a copy machine so I traveled to Missouri and hand copied the bible. Thomas Willoughby Waters was born 14 November 1763.
I had originally placed Thomas Willoughby Waters as the son of Thomas Waters. I do not now believe that is correct due to finding the following document:
Will Book L, Page 375 - 386
Newberry County, South Carolina
21 September 1829
The will of Mary Ann Waters Davidson
She names her friends Thomas Pratt and Presley B. Ruff the loft whereon my store house at Benediet's Shop, Douglas & Johnson Law Office---in all buildings of every description, my mulatto female Nancy and her son. My negro female Janny. Stock of goods I may have at the store, silver table and tea spoons---my late husband John B. Davidson---watch,portrait,books, horse and wagon, chest, bed and furniture, $500.00----
Decent tombstone for me and Mr. Davidson. Executors to sell my house and lot as soon as profitable after my death. If money left over after debts are paid then give to the following legatees: Give negro man Jesse to my nephew Phillip Schoppert. To my neice Precious Shell my riding gig and harness. To Mrs. Dorothy B. Pratt $200.00. To John C. Harrington $200.00. To William Boyce $200.00 Remaining money to be devided into 6 equal shares ---one share to nephew Phillip Schoppert, 2 shares to neice Precious Shell, 2 shares to neice Elizabeth Stephenson and one share to neice Mary Ann Shell.-----
On the annual returns on her and her husbands estate went to the children of her sister Catherine Schoppert, who were Precious Shell, Phillip Schoppert, and Elizabeth Stephenson, wife of Joel Stephenson and Precious Lark, daughter of her brother Thomas W. Waters.
Mary Ann Waters Davidson was born 24 October 1773 and died 21 September 1829 in Newberry, South Carolina. She was a native of Maryland and had resided in Newberry 28 years prior to her death according to what was written at the time of her death. First, Thomas Waters was in South Carolina in 1773 and a very active citizen. He was not in Maryland. These 3 persons--Thomas Willoughby Waters, Catherine Waters Schoppert and Mary Ann Waters Davidson are probably the children of John Waters who stayed in the north according to an obituary in 1844, which will be given later, John Waters also witnessed a deed for Philemon Waters II in 1768 in Prince William County, Virginia. Maryland was right across the Potomoc River from Prince William County, Virginia and he well could have lived there for several years. This is my theory and I will let it stand until someone comes up with more proof. The Fanny Waters Ellis ( Thomas Willoughby Waters ) Bible is owned by:
