96th District, South Carolina
17 December 1780
To Colonel Thomas Waters
Sir:
I have just received yours
and am glad to hear that you are in such respectable force on Broad River.
The late check the rebels have received made it necessary that you should
immeadiately cross the river and join General Cunningham that the enemy
may be pressured before they have time to collect themselves again in force.
General Cunningham is at Williams about seventeen miles over the Saluda.
Whether your best rout will be by this part or not I cannot say, but shall
leave that to your discretion as you will be able to procure the best information
from the militia in Long Cane as soon as you cross. You will be so good
as to send to the nearest militia officer and let him know your intentions.
The sooner your junction is effected with General Cunningham the better.
I am with respect.
Your Most Obed. Servant,
Signed. Lt. Col. Allen
