Children & Grandchildren

VIII---Rosannah Waters was born in the year 1786 in South Carolina. She was the youngest child of Thomas Waters. She married John Holley who was born in 1785 in Edgefield District, South Carolina, the son of James Holley.

John & Rosannah married about 1807. Rosannah died ca 1856. John died 23 September 1861. Both are buried in the old Holley-Waters Cemetery in Saluda County, South Carolina

Whey they were first married they lived in Newberry County on Buffalo Creek.John purchased land from his brother-in-law "Ferry Phil" Waters. Land that had been originally granted to their uncle, Col. Philemon Waters. This land was in Newberry County. They lived here until about the year 1829. "Ferry Phil" had died in 1818 and most of his family had gone to Alabama. John & Rosannah purchased 800 acres of land from her nieces and nephews, children of Ferry Phil.  They moved just across the Saluda River into what was then Edgefield County, now Saluda. This land in Edgefield and Lexington Counties was the original 4 tracts of land that Col. Phil had surveyed for his brother, Col. Thomas Waters. With this purchase came the Waters Ferry which had been established in 1788 by "Ferry Phil." They lived and raised all their children on this land and part of it is still in the family today ( 1999 ).Part of it is still in Lexinton County and lies on Rocky Creek.

Their children were:

1. Wilkes Holley born 1808. Wilkes died after 1880. His children were;

1. Rosannah Holley born 1832

2. Frances Holley born 1835

3. Nancy Holley born 1836

4. Louisa Ann Holley born 1838: maried Thomas Harris. She died in 1928.

5. Margaret Holley born 1840


2. David Mark Holley born 1810 in Newberry County, South Carolina. He married about 1830 to Mary ___? He  moved to Butler County, Alabama with his Waters cousins in the late 1830's. He was listed in the 1840 Butler County, Alabama census. By 1850 he was in Attala County, Mississippi. Mary died  and about 1859 he narried Elizabeth Jane McBride. He was a very handsome 49 year old and Elizabeth was a very beautiful 18 year old. She was the daughter of James McBride and Martha "Patsy" Cain of South Carolina & Attala County, Mississippi. Mark Holley owned a tavern at Attalaville, which is now extinct. Four men played cards--gaming it was called -plain old gambling. One of the men was Dr. Segurs. He and the other 2 planned to kill Mark Holley. The three drew cards to see which one would kill Mark Holley. Dr. Segurs was the man to kill him.  One of the men told Mark Holley. When Dr. Segurs approached Mark's place of business Mark ordered him to not enter. Segurs entered anyway with a drawn pistol and Mark Holley shot him. Dr. Segurs died. Mark Holley was charged with "Gaming" and "Murder." John Carnes was one of the 4 men and he came forward and told the true story of how they had planned to murder Mark Holley. Mark was found "Not Guilty"

Mark Holley died in 1865. He was buried at the old pioneer cemetery called " Suggs Graveyard", which is now an abandoned cemetery. Elizabeth Jane died between 1870 and 1880. She is also buried at Suggs.  Mark  had sent 5 sons to the Civil War--only 2 returned.  His children were:

1. John Philemon Holley born 1832 in Edgfield Co,, SC. Died 1862 in the Civil War.

2. Jethro Manning Holley born 1834: died 1913 and is buried in Attala County, Mississippi. He was the only son to return from the Civil War.

3. Lydia Ann Holley born 1836.--Incomplete

4. George H. Holley born 1838; died 1862 in the Civil War.

5. Samuel Farrow Waters Holley born 1842; died 1865 in the Army Hospital in Richmond, Virginia\

6. William Monroe Holley born 18 October 1846. He died 1928 in Memphis, Tennessee.

7. Caroline Frances Holley born 1848. Incomplete

From his 2nd marriage to Elizabeth Jane McBride he had these children;

8. James Madison Holley born 5 November 1861. He married Martha Elizabeth Virginia Burks, the daughter of John Wesley Burks and Martha Jane Summerlin. He moved from Attala County, Mississippi to Madison County, Mississippi in 1899. It was only about 5 miles away but in a different county. He died 24 November 1921  at the Baptist Hospital, Jackson Mississippi. He was buried at Rocky Hill Cemetery, Madison County, Mississippi. James Madison Holley was the father of Sam B Holley (1900- 1980 ) and the Grandfather of Sammie Jean Holley Day. Col. Thomas Waters was the 3rd Great Grandfather of Sammie Jean Holley Day.

9. Mary Jane Holley born 1864. She married Bob Redd. Incomplete.
